Thank you for this reflection and connections to the past year of your _My Integrated Life_ posts, but also the history of the internet, the rise of social media, and the challenges and possibilities technology poses. 🙏🏼 Thank you for what you've done and continue to do to keep us reflecting, connecting, and moving forward with knowledge, care, connection, and solidarity! 💜
Just now getting back to the post after a busy day. Gratified to see your appreciation. I was fortunate to be in SF/Marin during the dawn of the Mac/GUI paradigm. So many possibilities back then. Hippies with computers were saving the world. The World Wide Web, wondrous in it's potential also set the stage for the mass insanity we suffer as I alluded to today. Much more to come on this always-compelling stroll through digital history!
Thanks, Brother! I’ll forward this to many because most people figure that if you’re a musician and you’ve played on “records” and been on stage that you’re set for life and what are you complaining about? This spells it out very well in a non-complaining tone!
It's true. The internet has exploited creatives for more than 25 years, but now, Substack has given us our livelihoods back. And it's come along at just the right time. Readers are sick of scrolling through free online "junk food," and are looking for writers they can trust with their time. And once they know they can trust us with their time, they follow with their money. It's one of the only truly fair platforms that has worked for me since traditional publishing all but shut its doors.
Yep, I can hardly believe it sometimes (while remaining rooted in reality about the nature of these platforms) I remember being massively disappointed that no one would "do something" about rampant exploitation. But then I came to realize that the digital guys really didn't feel any obligation to rectify the problem because, after all, we're all just data coming across their gateways. The 30-year political and financial food fight over who controls the onramps to the information superhighway, has led us here....To Substack.
