The following is an episode of a continuing series derived from the celebration of the life and writing of Jack Kerouac produced at the former New College of California in 2003. The Master of Ceremonies is Gerald Nicosia then a SF-based Kerouac Scholar and archivist. Welcome to Episode Two….
Lenore Kandell an important San Francisco poet in her own right and a friend to JK. She is introduced here by Gerald Nicosia. I hope that the automated transcript feature is working. As the readers present Kerouac’s work, being able to read along taking it in visually is almost as interesting as having the book in front of you..(I did say almost)
An immortal presence on the scene in the late 1950’s into the ‘60’s. Kerouac put her into Big Sur as the character Romana Shwartz. She reads with great empathy and nuance owing to the relationship she maintained with him. In 1966 She was “blessed” with the honor of having her short book of Poetry “The Love Book” confiscated by The San Francisco police. The notoriety bestowed celebrity status upon her. She promptly returned the favor by donating one percent of the considerable profits to the Police Retirement Association.
Much more to know about Lenore but for now, lend an ear and your heart to her as she reads and imparts insights about her friend. There is a transcription feature which should be available for you to read along.
Additionally…..
Her ability to voice the conundrum…
Boy howdy, it’s nice to know that IWC community readers can appreciate episodes like this.
